Mexico is one of the most visited countries in the world, with tourism being its largest industry. Diving holds its prominent place among all the different types of tourism in Mexico. It is easy to see why. It is home to the second largest coral reef in the world with its beautiful, and sometimes fascinating, inhabitants. There is a huge number of cenotes and caves that can surprise even most experienced divers. There is an underwater museum with more than 500 statues that have already acquired their permanent residents, and of course, many underwater inhabitants, ranging from beautiful fish, to sea turtles to large whales and sharks.
But let’s talk about everything in order. The largest concentration of diving sites can be found on or near the Yucatán. This peninsula is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and, like a good Swiss cheese, it is permeated with a huge number of cenotes and caves. Amazingly, the largest cave system in the world is located here, on Yucatán Peninsula! What a place for vacation with excellent conditions for freediving, snorkeling and scuba diving!
Scuba or snorkeling in the sea will please you with a huge variety of marine life, the underwater museum MUSA, which opened in 2010, and a coral reef with its indescribable natural beauty. And all this is at a relatively low depth of 6-10 meters (18-30 feet), so it is convenient for all types of diving, great for beginners, and is even possible to experience without a diver’s certificate.
Mexico is an ideal place for vacation
Exploring the cenotes with a snorkel and a mask is an adventure of its own kind. While you usually need a certificate and a guide for scuba diving, with no more than 4 divers per instructor, there are no particular limits for snorkeling. You can experience incredible cenotes with their intriguing life. Meet with friendly crocodiles, and dive from the cliffs into crystal clear water without a need for an instructor or heavy equipment.
In summary, Mexico is an ideal place for diving vacation. Whether you are an experienced diver, looking to complete training and get certified, or someone who has never tried diving, but dreams to, Mexico will not disappoint. And as for travellers with you, who may not be interested in diving, no worries – they will simply enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the local unique nature, warm weather, rich culture and friendly people.
